Our early years!
The Cedar Rod & Gun Club was founded in 1936 by Pete Schettek, Paul Garvin, Rufus Brow, and Joe Pleva. In the early days, our meetings took place at various locations, including the Solon Township Hall, the Cedar Fire Hall, and Brow's Barber Shop in Cedar. These humble beginnings marked the start of what would grow into a thriving community hub for outdoor sports enthusiasts.
Purchase of land and trap shooting
In 1960, we purchased 25 acres of land on Sullivan Road from John Rosinski, providing a permanent home for the club. Two years later, we established trap shooting, which continues to be a cherished tradition at the site to this day.
Building our clubhouse
In 1964, we moved a log building from Lake Leelanau to serve as our clubhouse, a significant milestone for the Club. Then, in 1966, we added a garage and moved from Greilickville to the north side of the clubhouse. We also expanded our facilities to better accommodate our growing community.
Expanding facilities for new activities
During the early 1970s, we added a Skeet and Rifle range to enhance our offerings. By 1978, we had also added a kitchen to the clubhouse. In 1990, we established a range for Sporting Clays, followed by an expansion of the clubhouse in 1992 with an addition to the east end. The addition of a Pistol Range in 1994 made the Cedar Rod & Gun Club a truly multifaceted recreational facility.
A non-profit and Educational Foundation
The Cedar Rod & Gun Club operates as a not-for-profit corporation, focused on serving our community. In 2001, we established the Cedar Rod & Gun Club Educational Foundation. As a 501(c)(3) charity, the Foundation is dedicated to providing training and education, helping to ensure that our members continue to learn and grow in their outdoor sports pursuits.
